Description – essential information

The restoration of riparian and green areas in the flood-prone urban spaces increases their capacity for water retention and flood prevention. The green infrastructure ensures also long-term storage of emitted carbon, supporting thus the climate change mitigation attempts.

The Green Infra project aimed at developing a globally applicable framework for stakeholders to transit ‘from grey to green’ and thus catalyse the development of the nature-based infrastructure, boosting the restoration of flood-prone areas. It was initiated to provide an alternative, or at least a valuable addition to traditional, ‘grey’ methods of flood prevention such as building dykes. It highlighted the role of green infrastructure in climate mitigation and promoted the greener environment that would be more attractive for living, recreation and tourism.

The Centre for Systems Solutions (CRS) was engaged in supporting one of the project’s partners, EIT+, in conducting the case study of the Kozanów (PESTLE analysis, the organization of the field visit) and in the co-organisation of the partners meeting in Wrocław. In addition to this, CRS also initiated another case study in Tarchalice-Domaszkow, where the focus was placed on dyke realignment. As part of the process, a workshop with stakeholders was organized. It was directed towards liking the flood and biodiversity-related goals with a broader set of benefits from enhanced ecosystem services. Especially for the purpose of the workshop, the Business Model Canvas had been modified to embrace ecosystem services. Our team was also involved in designing and running the group model building course on ecosystem services and managed the development of the deliverable 3.1 “Framework enabling (SME) products/tools” reviewing a broad range of tools that could be used by SME to promote green infrastructure solutions.
