Nexus Simulation: A workshop for the African Development Bank
Description – essential information
The African Development Bank (AfDB) connects many African countries in an overarching goal to spur sustainable economic development and social progress in its regional member countries (RMCs), thus contributing to poverty reduction.
In October 2017 the AfDB held a Water and Sanitation Knowledge Sharing and Learning Week (23-27 October 2017) in Abidjan for staff from country and regional offices across Africa, on the theme “Building capacities for AfDB professionals to speed up water & sanitation access for all”. On that occasion, Centre for Systems Solutions had an opportunity to present the Nexus Game to the participants. This interactive role-play activity explores the interdependencies, trade-offs and synergies in the water-energy-food system, and provides a playful environment for mock negotiations and decision-making.
Assuming the roles of inhabitants of two bordering countries, the players were able to discover many analogies between the simulation and the problematic situations that they encounter in their day-to-day work. The responses to the simulation were overwhelmingly positive, with most participants feeling that the game did a very good job in helping them to better understand the complex net of connections existing in the water-energy-food system, and that it was highly engaging and fun.
We invite you to follow the information (news) about the project.
