PARATUS Summer School

Michalina Kułakowska took part in the PARATUS Summer School organised by the University of Vienna. The summer school was an opportunity to get an insight into the complex impacts chains of multi-hazard events.

The week was full of engaging and interactive lectures and workshops based on the case studies from PARATUS project e.g., the implications of earthquakes in Turkey, storm events in the Caribbean or large cascading events on emergency response in Romania.

Michalina not only participated in the lecture, but also demonstrated to the participants the Pantano High Water social simulation developed for PARATUS. In this fictional reality, participants taking on roles of scientists and policy makers, had to plan actions and vote on policies in order to mitigate consequences of flood. The overall conclusion of participants was that there are many decisions one may take, and cooperation may not always be easy, but people’s safety and lives are impacted by any decision taken by policy makers and scientists. The simulation fits into PARATUS framework – it helps stakeholders learn from the past and adapt to changes.
