Transformation Lab #5: How Does Food Data Influence Our Everyday Choices?

Do food labels really help us make more informed dietary decisions? Which types of food-related data matter most to consumers, and which remain unclear or difficult to interpret? These were some of the key questions explored during the fifth edition of the Transformation Lab “Food Data and Learning”, held on 8 May 2026 at CAL Chopina in Wrocław.

The workshop was organized as part of the Horizon Europe-funded FOODMISSION PROJECT in in collaboration with Stowarzyszenie Druga Runda, CAL Chopina, and Miasto Wrocław, brought together participants interested in sustainable food systems, education, and the future of food-related decision-making.

Throughout the workshop, participants worked individually, in pairs, and in small groups to examine how everyday food choices affect both personal health and the environment. One of the featured activities, “Food as a System”, encouraged participants to look at familiar food products from a broader perspective — considering not only nutritional value, but also environmental impact, production methods, and packaging.

The food data mapping session sparked particularly engaging discussions. Participants reflected on which information they consider most important while shopping and how different types of food-related indicators influence their choices. The conversations highlighted that while consumers increasingly pay attention to ingredients and nutritional value, many sustainability-related indicators still feel abstract, difficult to compare, or challenging to understand without additional context.

Participants also shared personal experiences connected to food information and dietary needs. Discussions touched on topics such as glycemic load, protein content, and the accessibility of information related to food production methods. Together, we explored how digital learning tools could support more conscious and sustainable food choices in everyday life.

The insights and experiences gathered during the workshop will contribute to the further development of the FOODMISSION platform, which aims to help users better understand food-related data and support the transition toward more sustainable food systems.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the inspiring discussions!
